June Evening Classes: Spiritual Movies (Comedies) With Profound Spiritual Themes

Be prepared to laugh! Come and enjoy three fabulous comedies that are based on fascinating spiritual theories and metaphysical phenomenon. For three Thursday evenings in June, we’ll be watching some of the funniest "spiritual" movies ever made. Following the films, we’ll be discussing the profound meanings of the spiritual issues presented in these films:

All of Me (1984) – spiritual theme: journey (transmigration) of the soul. Synopsis: On her deathbed, mean-spirited millionaire Lily Tomlin has her Will amended so that her soul will pass into the body of young, healthy Victoria Tennant. Thanks to a mix-up in transferring her soul, Tomlin winds up instead trapped in the body of upright (and uptight) attorney Steve Martin. As ridiculous as it sounds, All of Me is completely credible, thanks to Steve Martin's remarkable "body language" when conveying the notion that he's two different people with two different sets of emotions and gestures.
Hearts and Souls (1991) – spiritual theme: the soul’s need to resolve important situations before moving onward. Synopsis: A fatal bus accident links the spirits of four (dead) passengers to a newborn baby who is born during the bus crash. For 25 years, Milo (Tom Sizemore), Harrison (Charles Grodin), Penny (Alfre Woodard) and Julia (Kyra Sedgwick) remain bound to Thomas Reilly (Robert Downey Jr.). Suddenly, the four spirits realize that they were meant to enter into Thomas (one at a time) to bring closure to their unfinished lives. Thomas' innate decency asserts itself, and he helps them to right the wrongs in their former lives. Subsequently, they achieve their goal of settling accounts and moving on into the afterlife.
Chances Are (1989) – spiritual theme: reincarnation and remembering a past life. Synopsis: Washington attorney Louie Jeffries dies in a car crash and finds himself in Heaven. He is dissatisfied with the customer service he's receiving in Heaven, so he jumps the gun and is reincarnated – but - before receiving the magic injection that removes all memories of his former life. For the next 25 years, Louie's wife, Corinne (Cybill Shepherd), remains true to her husband's memory, ignoring the frustrated devotion of Louie's best friend, Philip Train (Ryan O'Neal). Meanwhile, Louie's soul has grown-up in the body of Alex Finch (Robert Downey Jr.). Suddenly, Alex's memories of his life as Louie return and he tries convincing Corinne that he was her husband (Louie), and he is having trouble spurning his daughter's advances.
